The inaugural presentation of Rig Rescue took place on April 15, 2018 in the College Center Gym at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. The Challenge is hosted by sister AMA organization & student club – the SUNY AMA University Model Aviation Student Club and is run by a collaboration of SUNY engineering student clubs – Fabrication, Baja, & 3d Printing & Design. The challenge was mapped out several seasons in advance as a low-cost option for educators to inject competition into their curricula. For 2019, the Challenge was FOREST FURY. For the first time, a two-field competition was held in the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcat Field House. 2020 FARM-i-GEDDON, ran as a full season without a championship. Originally set for April 5, 2020 with 11 competing teams from 2 States, the event was closed down with the rest of the World. A few months later, we pivoted to U.S. Drone Soccer. METRO MELTDOWN and CONSTRUCTION CATASTROPHE plans were mapped out but remain on hold indefinitely.
Now in our 10th year, CNY Drones, continues through a core Planning Committee of committed community-minded commercial drone pilots, enthusiasts, educators and trainers, extending our reach to inner-city & rural populations in New York State. With the growth of U.S. Drone Soccer, our reach is extending further to accommodate school teams in AMA District II New York/New Jersey.
CNY Drones was the 1st Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Model Aviation Student Club in New York State & continues to mentor NY’s 1st University Model Aviation Student Club @ SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY. CNY Drones is proud to be part of the U.S. Drone Soccer Association, as District II (NY/NJ) Directors working out of the Northeast Hub at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

It all started in 2007. A couple of robotics team parents decided to coach a team of grade school students known as the RoboSpartans. The team had an incredibly successful run as a founding team of our region’s FIRST LEGO League & FIRST Tech Challenge programs & as a 4X World Championship team. Former veteran coaches, robotics team members & regional STEM event coordinators initially met with drone enthusiasts, educators, government officials & drone technology company representatives monthly during 2016 to establish the direction & initial operational plan of the group now known as CNY Drones.
Annual Drone Info Day
In October 2016, we established our area’s gathering of all-things-drone-related to connect students with drone technology education & employment opportunities and to kick-off the build season for our Annual Team Drone Challenge. Held with the help of Oneida County in a former nose-dock at Griffiss Technology Park, our event was the first of it’s kind in our region.
